Candy Pecan Tree
In Ocean Springs, Mississippi, a chance seedling from the Candy pecan tree grew on the property of W. B. Schmidt. It was soon noticed for the wonderful qualities that make this tree a keeper. The Candy is extremely prolific which makes it perfect for landscaping due to its attractive leafing. It is resistant to pecan scab. Candy produces a smaller size nut that is oval shaped and has excellent shelling qualities. Normally there are 66 to 68 nuts per pound. The high percentage of fancy kernels the Candy produces has a smooth texture and an exceptional flavor which is great for fruitcakes and candies. You can expect to start seeing your own high quality pecans in just a few years because the Candy is highly precocious. It has mid-season pollen shed and the flowers are receptive in the beginning of the season. Expect to see pecans falling in late September so you can fetch a good, early-bird price at market. In order to help ensure abundant production of pecans, we recommend that you purchase a Type I tree to pair with this choice. Pecan varieties such as the Desirable, Cape Fear, Caddo or the Oconee would make wonderful choices to cross pollinate with your Type II tree, the Candy pecan tree.
